Bears on Bears quoted in “Faeries, Bears, and Leathermen”

RJS quoted in Faeries, Bears, and Leathermen Faeries, Bears, and Leathermen cover

My writing on Bears was quoted at length in the 2008 nonfiction book Faeries, Bears, and Leathermen: Men in Community Queering the Masculine by Peter Hennen, a sociology professor at the Ohio State University at Newark. The chapter on bears, “Bear Bodies, Bear Masculinity,” includes several excerpts from my book, Bears on Bears: Interviews and Discussions.

Mr Hennen quotes from my interviews with Jack Fritscher, Reed Wilgoren, and Pete Vafiades, although oddly enough he gets Pete’s name wrong:

. . . But it is clear that from the outset, the Lone Star was primarily understood by its owner as a commercial venture. Bob Vafiades, one of the original Lone Star bartenders, recalls . . .

Let’s hope he gets all the other details right. The book also quotes my article “Bear Roots” in The Bear Book.

I have not yet read the book, but I’m looking forward to it, and glad to see that his thoughtful analysis of Bears made it into print from University of Chicago Press.
