Civil Union Announcement: Russo / Suresha

Dr Rocco Russo and Ron Jackson Suresha, both of New London, are pleased to announce their upcoming Civil Union ceremony, on Saturday, October 1st, at the Hartford Municipal Building, 550 Main Street in Hartford. At noon, after they receive their CU license, they will be united by a local Justice of the Peace in the Municipal Building Atrium.

Russo and Suresha were legally married in Provincetown, Massacusetts, on October 10, 2004, but the new Connecticut law regarding Civil Unions does not recognize same-gender marriage from another state.

The couple, along with dozens of other same-gender couples from across the state, will be part of history as the City of Hartford opens its doors for the sole purpose of for Civil Unions. Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez says, “This is a Civil Rights milestone in Connecticut. This is building on the City of Hartford's long history of officially recognizing domestic partnerships, which began back in 1983.”

Friends of the couple are welcome to join in the public ceremony and celebrations in Hartford.

Ron Jackson Suresha is an editor, anthologist, and writer. He is considered an authority on emergent queer masculinities, in particular the subcultures of gay and bi male Bears and of male bisexuality. For Ron's service to the bear community, he was named "Bear of the Year" 2008. He is also a licensed Justice of the Peace in Connecticut, an ordained minister, ULC, and a member of the New London Green Party. Nonfiction works include Bears on Bears: Interviews & Discussions; Bi Men: Coming Out (coeditor, with Pete Chvany); Bisexual Perspectives on the Life and Work of Alfred C. Kinsey (editor). His latest book is The Uncommon Sense of the Immortal Mullah Nasruddin: Stories, jests, and donkey tales of the beloved Persian folk hero, published by Lethe Press.
