Pretrip bustles

Running around like a madwolf in the attempt to tie up zillions of loose ends before heading out first thing tomorrow for Michigan. Haven't been back since 2002 while book touring for Bears on Bears.

Road trip! Fuck me – it's spring and they're predicting SNOW tomorrow!

On the way out I'm staying with renaissance guy Nick Vannello in Cleveland. Sounds like he's got some evil entertainment planned that evening.

I'll get to have dinner Wednesday with my dad's ladyfriend, Claudia, whose son-in-law just died of an unexpected heart attack (nice guy: he was my age and a newspaper editor). While visiting my pals John and Vern in Detroit proper for a day, I'll stop by my hometown, Oak Park, and my mom's grave. (My dad was cremated and his ashes spread, but I still have some with me.)

While in Ann Arbor, I'll get to visit the Hopwood Room during their weekly literary tea. That evening, there's a reception and book reading at Common Language, which is one of the three or four GBLT bookstores in the whole country worth going to these days, advises my friend, the GLBT marketing maven Michele Karlberg.

I'm excited and nervous about presenting at the American Men's Studies Assoc conference. I don't much know the AMSA people – the men's studies movement hasn't gained a fraction of the academic or political interest that the field(s) of women's / gender studies have. I sense they're mostly academics and psychologists. Do I wear a suit?
