It's up to Rhode Island: Stop Bush's anti-U.N. Ambassador

It's up to Rhode Island: Stop Bush's anti-U.N. Ambassador
From: “Noah T. Winer, MoveOn PAC”

In the next few days, Rhode Island residents can significantly improve
America's relations with the rest of the world.

President Bush has nominated John Bolton to be our ambassador to the
United Nations. Bolton is a devout believer in go-it-alone militarism as
the basis of our foreign policy. He's on record saying that
international law is just an invalid restriction of American power and
that “If the U.N. secretary building in New York lost 10 stories, it
wouldn't make a bit of difference” [1]. Depending on him to cooperate
with the world would be a disaster.

But with your help, we won't have to. The Senate Foreign Relations
committee is about to vote on Bolton's nomination. Every Democrat on the
committee is prepared to vote against him, and if Rhode Island Senator
Lincoln Chafee joins them, Bolton's nomination will be dead.

Please call Senator Chafee right now and ask him to vote against John
Bolton for United Nations ambassador:

Senator Lincoln Chafee

All indications are that Senator Chafee is very close to opposing
Bolton–and that a wave of calls from Rhode Islanders could put him over
the top [2].

With Chafee on the line, the hearing has been delayed [3]. Bush will be
applying intense pressure in the next few days, and we've got to match
it by showing how much real constituents care about preserving
international cooperation. Please make sure Senator Chafee represents
Rhode Island and our national interests by calling today to oppose the
nomination of John Bolton for United Nations Ambassador.

Here's a little more background on John Bolton:

Bolton's blatant hostility to diplomacy has already made the world a
much more dangerous place. As the chief Bush administration
non-proliferation official, Bolton scuttled negotiations with both North
Korea and Iran, allowing both of these hostile powers to move much
closer to the production of nuclear weapons [4].

As the head of a sham thinktank, Bolton solicited and received foreign
government donations to help the Republican National Committee. This
sparked a Congressional investigation, and the organization lost its
non-profit status for highly partisan activities [5].

Thank you for all that you do.

Sincerely,

–Noah T. Winer, Ben Brandzel, and the MoveOn PAC team
